Readex to Launch FBIS Daily Report Annexes, 1974-1996

Intelligence archive provides rarely seen perspectives on international politics and world history

DECEMBER 2, 2009 (NAPLES, FL)Readex, a division of NewsBank, will release a digital edition of FBIS Daily Report Annexes, 1974-1996 in early 2010. An essentialcomplement to FBIS Daily Reports, 1974-1996, the approximately 5,500 Annexes inthis unique collection offerfresh insight into decades of turbulent world events.

Full textsearchable for the first time, FBIS Daily Report Annexes will feature individual citations foreach article as well as highlighted events to assist student researchers.

Like the related Daily Reports, FBIS Daily Report Annexes presents views andinformation from thousands of monitored broadcasts and publications. Created bythe U.S. intelligence community to benefit analysts and policy makers, Annexes were “ForOfficial Use Only.” Only the Central Intelligence Agency holds all of theAnnexes, although some libraries may have a few copies in their GovernmentDocuments collections.

The Foreign Broadcast InformationService (FBIS) Daily Report and its successor have been the United States ’ principal record ofpolitical and historical open source intelligence for nearly 70 years. Theoriginal mission of the FBIS was to monitor, record, transcribe and translateintercepted radio broadcasts from foreign governments, official news services,and clandestine broadcasts from enemy and occupied territories.

Many of these materials are first-handreports of events as they occurred. As such, the Readex digital edition of the Foreign BroadcastInformation Service Daily Reports, including also Daily Reports, 1941-1974, isa comprehensive broadcast and news archive of exceptional importance forresearching 20th-century world history.
