Lukas Etter, Ph.D., holds a research and teaching position (North American Literary and Cultural Studies) at the University of Siegen, Germany. Distinctive Styles and Authorship in Alternative Comics (De Gruyter, 2021) is the result of his doctoral dissertation, whereas his current research focuses on the social and aesthetic dimensions of word problems in American school mathematics before 1865.

To gain insight into the connections between antebellum school mathematics, on the one hand, and the debates on how most speedily to abolish slavery, on the other, it is invaluable to research databases of antebellum publications.
