Dael Norwood is a historian of early America, specializing in the global dimensions of American politics and economics. Currently serving as a Bernard & Irene Schwartz Postdoctoral Fellow at the New-York Historical Society, his book manuscript, “Trading in Liberty,” examines how the lucrative commerce between the U.S. and Asia became deeply intertwined with the political struggles over sovereignty, expansion, and slavery that defined the early American state. A New Englander by birth but a Brooklynite by current location, Norwood is also working on a history of “the businessman” as a potent political and cultural identity in America. His article, “Lake Erie by Way of Guangzhou: Or, The Other Canal Boom,” appeared in the September 2012 issue of The Readex Report.
